Oil Paintings

From an early age Tanya has enjoyed working with oil. She delights in the smell of linseed and turpentine, the tactility and chroma of the paints and the spring and adaptability of the brushes. As her work matured in this media, she came to appreciate its versatility and flexibility and now prefers it to all other paint media. She has found that it is a perfect counterpoint to printmaking, particularly woodblock, which requires that all artistic decisions be made prior to the first step of the process. By contrast, working in oil allows the artist to make decisions right up to the last brush stroke.Oil paintings on linen range from US $250 to $5000. Limited edition archival prints on paper or canvas range from US $175 to $900. Kindly contact Phoenix Gallery for details of pricing, shipping and handling.

Woodblock Prints

In 1986 Tanya left Vancouver to study the art of woodblock printmaking at the studio of Toshi Yoshida in Tokyo, Japan. In 1991 her work in this discipline was recognized by winning “Gold for a New Member” at the annual Nihonhangakai. This is the largest juried exhibition of woodblock prints in the world, held in Japan, and attracts 1700 to 2000 international entries. Each woodblock print is hand printed by the artist on handmade mulberry paper and is an original work of art. This style of woodblock printmaking is highly complex as each image requires numerous handcarved printing plates. Water based pigments are transferred from the printing plate to the paper using a baren, a hand tool that creates heat that binds the pigment to the fiber of the paper, creating an inimitable luminosity and clarity of colour. As many as forty-five impressions may be necessary to complete a single image. Original limited edition woodblock prints on mulberry paper are available from US $175 to $1000.
